What Is A Good Credit Score?
If you are looking to buy a house or make an important financial move your credit score becomes an important reflection of your credit history and reliability. But what exactly is considered a good score?
The idea of being in good shape financially can be subjective but the solid numbers of a credit score create an objectivity that spans bureaus and creditors all over the country.
Multiple Scores
Like many things related to credit the range of scores differ between the three credit reporting bureaus TransUnion, Equifax and Experian (combined to be your VantageScore) as well as the common credit analysis firm FICO. If you are making a big financial move checking your scores across all bureaus is wise but for your normal life paying attention to one is usually fine (so long as you check them all periodically for major errors or omissions).
The Ranges
VantageScore guidelines generally see a score of 850-750 as excellent, 749-700 as good, 699-650 as fair, 649-600 as poor, and anything lower as bad.
FICO guidelines generally see a score of 850-800 as excellent, 799-740 as very good, 739-670 as good, 669-580 as fair, and anything under 579 as very poor.
Before you apply for a mortgage make sure you know what score they will be looking at because if you only look at your VantageScore your result may be a bit different if they look at your FICO score.
If you only every pay attention to your FICO score and you have a 698 you will think you are in ‘good’ standing but if your mortgage broker looks only at your VantageScore you will fall into the “fair” category. This could greatly impact what kind of mortgage you can get. Being away of both before making important decisions is a great way to get out ahead of any problems that may arise.
