Back to school time can always be a strain on your wallet. But what about this year when many districts don’t know if students will be learning online or in person?

With so much about the upcoming school year still up in the air it may seem silly to be thinking about buying anything just yet. And while waiting is certainly smart there are a few things you can look into right now that will come in handy either way.

Focus On Technology

While things are still up in the air focus on things your kids will need the most this year. One of these things is a laptop. While the country continues to grapple with COVID school may switch between in-person and online a few times this year. To be the most prepared for that scenario getting your child their own laptop is ideal and will make your life much less stressful trying to share one between multiple children or between yourself and your child.

Laptops can certainly be expensive but there are many out there that won’t break your budget and they will be useful for years to come! Simple laptops from Dell or Chromebook can be as low as $200 and will have everything your child will need learning from home. To get the best deals spend some time researching which laptop will best suit your child and their needs and then look around for a good price. For this kind of purchase you will likely want to shop at a major retailer since they can extend the biggest savings. Check out Target, Walmart, Best Buy and Amazon’s back to school promotions as well as promotions directly from the brand you are considering.

Don’t Go Crazy On Clothes

Since your child may be spending more time at home this year you don’t necessarily need to go crazy on purchasing a new wardrobe. Find the few items that are crucial and get them. You can always buy the rest later as the year progresses. While things are so uncertain it is most financially wise to get only what will be needed right away and grab the rest down the line. If you are worried about missing deep discounts don’t be! Retailers were hit hard by the pandemic closedowns and will likely be offering good discounts to drive sales for the rest of the year.

Stock Up on Re-Usable Masks

For many students going back to school will require a mask. If you have been using disposable masks it is time to ditch them for washable cloth masks. A box of disposable masks can cost $20 and maybe last you a month. Cloth masks on the other hand are much more budget friendly and can be washed and re-used over and over again. Check online sellers like Etsy for deals on bundles as well as stores like Target who are selling two-packs for adults and kids for only $4. You can spend $20 once on cloth masks or $20+ every month on disposable ones - the savings are clear!
